Some of the best conversations in life happen when there’s nowhere else to be.
No schedule.
No deadline.
No reason to check the time.
Just a few friends sitting around a fire while the night slowly settles in.
I remember a night like that years ago. The fire was small, the lake was quiet, and someone had brought a cooler that probably lasted longer than it should have.
The conversation started the way most do — work, sports, the usual things people talk about when they first sit down together.
But after a while something changed.
The fire burned lower.
The night grew quieter.
And the conversation got more honest.
We talked about things we didn’t usually say out loud.
Worries about the future.
Mistakes we had made.
The strange realization that life doesn’t always turn out the way you thought it would.
Nobody tried to fix anything.
Nobody offered big solutions.
We just listened to each other.
Looking back now, I realize something about friendships like that.
They don’t always show up in the big moments.
Sometimes they show up in the quiet ones — sitting around a fire while the world slows down long enough for people to simply be themselves.
And sometimes that’s exactly what someone needs.
The fire was still burning.
Everything looked the same.
But it didn’t feel the same anymore.
If this resonated with you, you’re not alone.
