The night the fire alarms wouldn’t stop

Nothing was wrong, but everything felt like it was…

In the middle of the night, every fire alarm in our house went off.

Not chirping.

Full alarm.

Loud. Continuous.

We jumped out of bed, checked everything.

No smoke.

No fire.

Nothing.

But they wouldn’t stop.

Then suddenly…

Silence.

Like nothing had happened.

We stood there trying to figure it out.

Then went back to bed.

The next morning I called my mom.

Told her what happened.

She paused.

Then said something that made the whole thing click.

At my grandpa’s house…

The fire alarms had gone off too.

And when they checked on him…

He had passed.

There was nothing wrong with our alarms.

Nothing to fix.

Nothing to explain.

My grandpa had always been a prankster.

Always one last laugh.

I guess… that was it.

The substitute teacher laughed too

Sometimes the part you remember forever, is the part everyone else forgot by lunch…

The machine that listened to the wind

Most people stop trying to reinvent the world sometime around middle age...

Not feeling those...
